William Herbert Wilde was born in the 1st quarter of 1878 at St Marylebone, Middlesex to John Wilde and Esther Wilde nee Cockett.

William´s father John Wilde was born about 1852 in Fearnall Heath, Worcestershire to blacksmith and farrier William Wilde, born about 1824 in Claines, Worcestershire, and Ann Wilde, born about 1819 in Crowle, Worcestershire. John Wilde was baptised on the 3rd of October 1852 in Claines, Worcestershire.

John Wilde married Esther Cockett, by Licence, on the 31stof August 1873 at St Marylebone in Middlesex. At the time of the marriage, the couple lived at St Marylebone and John was working as a coachman.

William´s mother Esther Cockett was born on the 10th of February 1848 in Lewisham, Kent to gardener James Cockett, born about 1816 in Hartfield, Sussex, and Elizabeth Cockett, born about 1817 in Battle, Sussex. Esther was baptised on the 9thof April 1848 at St Mary´s church in Lewisham. At the time of the baptism, the family lived at Brockley Place and James was working as a gardener.

William Wilde had four siblings: Eliza Mary Wilde born in the 3rd quarter of 1874 at St Pancras, Middlesex, Arthur Henry born in the 3rd quarter of 1880 at St Marylebone, Middlesex, John Wilde born in the 1st quarter of 1882 at St Marylebone, Middlesex and Henry James Wilde born in the 3rd quarter of 1890 at St Marylebone, Middlesex.

William Wilde was born in the 1st quarter of 1878 at St Marylebone, Middlesex and he was baptised on the 21st of April 1878 at St Marylebone, Middlesex. At the time of the baptism, the family lived at 26 Boston Street and John was working as a coachman.

At the time of the 1881 Census, the family lived at 26 Boston Street, St Marylebone, Middlesex. John was working as a coachman and Esther was at home looking after their children William Herbert, Eliza Mary and Arthur Henry. The household further comprised of John´s brother Herbert Wilde, an unemployed coachman.

At the time of the 1891 Census, the family lived at New Way Line, Harlow, Epping, Essex. John was working as a coachman and Esther was looking after their children: William, John and Henry James.

William Wilde married Julia Stedman in the 3rd quarter of 1899 in the Registration District of Reigate, Surrey.

Julia Stedman was born about 1874 in Rusper, Surrey.

The couple had a daughter Florence Julia Wilde. Florence was born on the 9thof November 1899 in Redhill, Surrey and was baptised on the 17th of December 1899 at St John´s church in Redhill, Surrey. At the time of the baptism, the couple lived at Redhill and William was working as a footman.

At the time of the 1901 Census, William Wilde and his wife Julia Wilde were servants of Bank of England official Charles Duberly and his family at 20 Southwick Street, Paddington, London. William Herbert was working as a man servant and Julia was a cook.

At the time of the 1901 Census, William´s daughter, Florence Wilde, was being looked after by monthly nurse Agnes E. Goldsmith. Agnes was living with her parents, livery-stableman William W. Goldsmith and Anna Goldsmith at 10 Garlands Road, Redhill, Surrey.

At the time of the 1911 Census, William Wilde and his wife Julia Wilde were servants of company director Martin Kenneth at 12 Grassington Road, Eastbourne, Sussex. The house had fourteen rooms.

At the time of the 1911 Census, William Herbert´s daughter, Florence Wilde, lived with her grandparents, retired groom domestic, John Wilde and Esther Wilde at Fearnhill Heath, Worcestershire. Esther stated that she had given birth to five children of whom, three were still alive. The house had six rooms.

William Wilde enlisted in Dorking, Surrey into the 112th Siege Battery of the Royal Garrison Artillery. He was a gunner with a regimental number 66042.

William Wilde died of wounds in an action on the 22nd of July 1916 in France.

He was buried at the Couin British Cemetery in France. His headstone reads the inscription: ‘He Shall Receive The Blessings From The Lord Rest in Hope.’

William Wilde received the British War and Victory medals.

William Wilde of St Swithun´s, High Street, Lewes, Sussex left to his wife Julia Wilde £118, 2s and 9d in probate.

Julia Wilde also received £2, 9s and 3d on the 2nd of November 1916 and the further £3 on the 12thof August 1919 in Soldier´s Effects.

Later, Julia Wilde moved to 2nd Lodge, Bury Hill, Dorking, Surrey.

According to the 1929 and 1937 Surrey, England, Electoral Registers William Herbert´s daughter Florence Wilde lived at Silver How, Cliftonville, Dorking.

According to the 1934 and 1935 Surrey, England, Electoral Registers William Herbert´s wife Julia Wilde and her daughter Florence Wilde lived at Avenue Lodge, Bury Hill, Westcott, Dorking.

According to the 1938 Surrey, England, Electoral Register, Julia Wilde lived at Avenue Lodge, Bury Hill, Westcott, Dorking.
