Private Gerald Spencer Evan Jones

Gerald Spencer Evan Jones was born on 29th July 1899 in Hampstead, London to engineer Spencer Evan and Constance Geraldine Jones (nee Kilburn). He was baptised in October 1899 in Emmanuel’s church, Hampstead.

Gerald’s father Spencer Evan was born about 1866 in Croydon to Spencer Evan and Louisa Phoebe Dyer born about 1846 in London, Middlesex. Spencer Evan Jnr was baptised on 6th April 1867 at St John the Baptist’s church in Croydon. His mother, Constance Geraldine Kilburn was born in the 3rd quarter of 1867 in Islington, London to East India merchant Charles, born about 1821 in Camberwell and Elizabeth born about 1831 in Islington. Spencer and Constance married in the 1st quarter of 1898 in Hampstead, London. Gerald had a sister Gwyneth Margaret Evan Jones born about 1903 in Hampstead.

At the time of the 1901 Census, the family lived at 16 Lyncroft Gardens, Hampstead. Spencer was working as a patent agent technical assistant and Constance was at home. The household further comprised of their son Gerald and a servant.

Gerald’s father Spencer died in the 3rd quarter of 1902 in Brighton, Sussex.

At the time of the 1911 Census, Constance and her children Gerald and Gwyneth were lodgers of quarryman William Honey at Tintagel in Cornwall. The house had nine rooms.

Gerald Jones enlisted in London into the Inns of Court Officers’ Training Corps which was a territorial unit closely associated with the legal profession.

He was a Private with regimental number 12571. At the time of his enlistment he resided at Beaulieu in Hampshire.

Gerald Jones died on 7th March 1918 at the Beeches Hospital in Berkhamsted, England. Berkhamsted was the location of a training camp of the Inns of Court Officers’ Training Corps.

He was buried on 13th of March 1918 at Dorking Municipal Cemetery. His cemetery reference is: 18.9757. His mother, Constance had been to Dorking before his death.

Gerald’s mother Constance lived at Moor End, Beaulieu, Hampshire and later in Dorking. On 20th June 1925 she was buried at Dorking Municipal Cemetery.
